Taking my Real World Experience to Washington

Recently I was asked to write a short blog post for The Hill, a website about Congress.  I wanted to share with you what I shared with them:

The current economic woes are certainly weighing heavily on the minds of voters. I am hearing first hand from working people how they are affected. I am also hearing from them they don’t approve of the job Congress is doing and they want some fresh eyes on these problems we face. My message to Kentucky’s voters is simple - the Washington way doesn’t work and we need Members of Congress who have real life experience to fix this mess.

I have real life business experience and that is why I am running for Congress. I started working at my family’s company when it had just a few dozen people, and we now have roughly 500 workers. The employees at my plant count on me on me every day to provide health care coverage, and I take great pride in that we do provide health insurance a very low cost. We also provide free tuition to any of our workers who want to improve their education. Our belief is that it not only helps our company to lift up our workers, but also the community as a whole.

This real life experience is in deep contrast with my opponent, who has been a state politician and lobbyist since 1978 and believes every answer comes from government. At a time when the entire nation is focused on how to fix our economy, his campaign is focused on negative, partisan politics. In fact, one of the ads run on his behalf was so dishonest it was taken off the air. His values are also out of line with Kentucky’s Second District. He won’t be voting for pro-life or pro-Second Amendment congressional leadership as I will, and he openly talks about eliminating the secret ballot in workplace labor union elections.

The next Congress is going to face many serious challenges and the solutions will set the path for our nation for years to come. We need new leadership in Congress who will put aside the political rhetoric and work towards answers. I have real world, Main Street business experience and am ready to take that to Washington to make changes for the better.

Out on the trail

Sorry about the long gaps between posts, my campaign calendar has been very full!  We’ve had a great week on the campaign trail and I’m looking forward to an even better weekend.

On Tuesday, we officially opened the Bowling Green Victory Center to a standing room only crowd of over 100.  I was flattered and very appreciative for all the kind words that Rep. Jim DeCesare and County Judge Mike Buchanon had for me in their speeches.  I hope all my supporters in the Warren County area will consider coming down to volunteer.  The address is 410 E. 10th Ave, across from the Old Courthouse in Bowling Green.

This weekend is filled with parades and festivals.  I’ve already been to Cow Days in Green County.  Tomorrow, I’ll be at Upton Days, Vine Grove Days, and at festivals in Muldraugh and Irvington.  The grand opening of the Victory Center in Elizabethtown is also scheduled for 4 PM EST on Saturday at 1815 N. Dixie Hwy.

I continue to be humbled by the tremendous amount of support that I have received in my travels.  I know that with your hard work and support, we will prevail on November 4th and show the liberals from Washington that Kentucky’s 2nd district is solid conservative territory.

Convention

The Republican National Convention is over, and I'm proud to stand with John McCain and Sarah Palin as they bring much needed reform to Washington DC.

We'll spend the next 60 days talking about reform and problem solving. Our energy crisis, the economy, and health insurance issues all require leaders more interested in problem solving than partisan politics.

I think McCain - Palin can provide that leadership better than Barack Obama, who proposes the same, tired big government solutions to our problems.

I join the McCain-Palin call for lower taxes, less spending, and a comprehensive energy plan. I hope you are as energized as I am heading in to the final two months of this campaign

Owensboro Industry Tours and Breckenridge County with Rep. Ron Lewis

I spent a full day campaigning in Owensboro and Breckenridge County yesterday.  I toured several Owensboro area businesses including Swedish Match, Unifirst Manufacturing, and Titan Manufacturing.  I appreciated very much seeing those operations up close and want to thank those companies for letting me tour their facilities.

I think it’s great that Owensboro has been able to cultivate such a diverse assortment of manufacturing companies that can offer good high paying jobs.  As the next Congressman for the 2nd District, I will work to make sure we keep those companies in Owensboro and bring in new ones throughout the district.

After the Owensboro tours, I traveled to Breckenridge County for an event with Congressman Ron Lewis and the local Republican Party.  Ron Lewis is a great patriot and briefed us on his efforts in Washington to pressure Nancy Pelosi in to calling the House back in to session to deal with high energy prices.  I appreciate Ron Lewis’s confidence and support during my campaign.  Thanks to County Judge Ray Powers and GOP Chair Connie Horsley for making the event a huge success.

Pelosi Vacations while Americans Pay

While the Democrat leadership in Congress would prefer to take a vacation, there are still those members of the House who think that now is the time to begin to give Americans relief high gas prices.  As your next Congressman from the Kentucky's 2nd District, I'll be one of them.  I urge you to read this article from this morning's Wall Street Journal by Rep. John Boehner and keep in mind that it's Nancy Pelosi and her allies denying the wishes of the vast majority of Americans by preventing expanded oil exploration.

Visiting Workers in Nelson County.

I had the pleasure of touring a couple of local industries while visiting Nelson County.  ARMAG Corporation and Synergy Tool and Gauge both supply products that keep our troops safe.  ARMAG produces storage facilities used by law enforcement and our military to securely store arms and explosives.

It was great to see the pride the employees justifiably took in the quality of their products.

I also enjoyed my visit to Synergy.  Among other things, they manufacture improved armor for military vehicles in combat zones.  It is inspiring to see hard working Kentuckians dedicating themselves to saving the lives of our soldiers.

Breckenridge Parade

Beautiful day in Breckinridge County, where Guthrie for Congress won best political entry in the county fair parade!  We've got the trophy to prove it- thanks to the local Chamber of Commerce for the recognition.

We had several helpful volunteers handing out stickers and talking up our Congressional campaign. People are excited about the campaign and we are looking forward to earning their votes this November.

I spent some time with clerk Jill Irwin and circuit clerk Connie Brumfield, and also had breakfast at the Masonic Lodge with Magistrate Ronnie Robinson and brother Johnny Embry. I'm proud of the organization we're building across the district.

4th of July Weekend

Campbellsville - July 4

I enjoyed breakfast at Campbellsville Christian Church early on the 4th.  Providing breakfast for the community is such a great ministry for the Church.  They fed a huge crowd that morning.   After breakfast, I had a brief opportunity to speak to the crowd downtown.  I spoke about the importance of remembering our troops in harm’s way while we celebrate our nation’s independence.  I also talked about the importance of our economic security to future generations.

I had a great time walking in the parade.  It was exciting to see the enthusiasm of the crowd.  I’ll never forget the little girl at the end of the parade route proudly waving an American Flag while sitting on the hood of her mother’s car.  The clouds and rain that moved in did nothing to dampen the excitement of everyone!

White Mills – July 5

I was thrilled to participate in the White Mills Days parade on Saturday.  It was exciting to see the whole community come together to celebrate their heritage.  After the parade, I enjoyed that world famous White Mills chicken!  No wonder folks are willing to wait in a long line to get some.  I appreciate everyone who took the time to share their thoughts on the important issues our nation faces.  The rising cost of gas, food and health care are hurting so many families.  With your help, I’ll take those concerns to Congress and work on bringing real solutions.

Weekend Update: Stephensburg Days

Stephensburg Days (Hardin Co)

Saturday was a fabulous day for a parade!  I got to meet a lot of new people, and ran into some old friends, during my day in Hardin County.  I think everyone, young and old alike, enjoyed the parade.  It was exciting to see so many locals supporting the festivities.  I got the opportunity to walk behind an enthusiastic troop of Girl Scouts.  Those young girls certainly represented their troop well!  I was impressed by number of patches and badges they have earned.

After the parade, I enjoyed a fresh cooked hamburger at one of the booths.  I even tried my hand at some of the games.  Many of the folks I talked to had the high cost of gas on their minds.  I’m concerned too.  It is long past time to start drilling and refining more of our own gasoline, and greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

It was great to see that the local churches, businesses and other organizations came out to show their civic pride.  Stephensburg is truly a vibrant community, and I look forward to coming back very soon.
